Splinterlands Review #17 / Fire Card / Giant Roc

Blockchain games are on 🔥🔥 these days and Splinterlands is one of them. Splinterlands is one of my favorite games so far. If you are new to this game, read this. In this splinterlands review, I am going to share one of the gameplays and talk about some cards I used. Hope you enjoy it!

Featured Card: Giant Roc

Giant Roc is a common fire melee attacker. It has the flying and reach ability on level 1, and gets the trample ability on level 6. Max level 5 Giant Roc can be used in the silver league, so you cannot use the trample ability in the silver league. For level 5 Giant Roc, you need 25 beta cards or 19 alpha cards.

The Battle

The battle was held in the silver league. The mana cap was 20 and the ruleset was ‘Taking Sides’. I picked a dragon team with fire splinter cards. The cards that I used were;

– Kretch Tallvor
– Void Dragon
– Giant Roc
– Pyromancer
– Radiated Schorcher

The enemy team was a death team with Thaddius as a summoner. The cards that the opponent used were;

– Thaddius Brood
– Cursed Windeku
– Carrion Shade
– Life Sapper
– Death Elemental
– Soul Strangler

My Team

Kretch Tallevor is a very simple summoner with no ability. Cheaper Dragon summoners usually cost 4~5 mana, however Kretch only costs 3 mana. This saved mana may be used to place one more monster.

Void Dragon is a legendary dragon monster in Chaos Legion Edition. It is a good tank against magic attacks due to its void ability. It also has the flying ability and 5 speed on level 1, which lets it evade some melee and ranged attacks.

Giant Roc is a melee attacker with the reach ability. It also has the flying ability so it can be useful in ‘Earthquake’ ruleset. It gets the trample ability on level 6, however the ability is available in and above the gold league.

Pyromancer is a ranged attacker with the blast ability. Compared to Fire Elemental, which also has the blast ability, Pyromancer has lower speed but higher health. It makes a good synergy with monsters that also have the blast ability, or with ‘Target Practice’ ruleset.

Radiated Scorcher is a melee attacker with only 1 mana cost. It has a similar utility to that of Furious Chicken or Creeping Ooze. It can be used for taking one or two opportunity attacks, or can be used as an attacker/tank in ‘Equalizer’ ruleset.

■ Tell us about your lineup. Explain why you put each card in that position and why they are a good fit with the monster.

I placed Void Dragon in the front end as the main tank of my team because it is an overall good tank. Giant Roc was in the second position as a reach attacker. The third was Pyromancer and it was my main attacker with the blast ability. Radiated Scorcher was placed in the back end as a possible sneak attack blocker.

■ Did your strategy work? What will you try differently next time?

Giant Roc couldn’t do much in the battle and was killed early by Cursed Windeku’s thorns attacks. The team would be stronger if I chose a summoner like Tarsa or if I put a sneak or opportunity attacker instead.

■ Do you like the monster? Why or why not?

I remember using Giant Roc often in battles before the Chaos Legion came out, especially when the ruleset was ‘Earthquake’. However, another fire reach attacker ‘Radiated Brute’ has a higher attack stat and now I am sticking to it rather than Giant Roc. Giant Roc might be more useful when it gets the trample ability in the gold league.
